Let me introduce my ideas of teaching I have always had lots of pupils, and I find it very inspiring to work with both young and older people. In 1998 i finished the highest degree of music at the University of Oslo. I studied and compared old and new celloschools. The results were a bit surprising. I found that many of the old methods written by capacities like Romberg, Dotzauer, Lee, Feuillard and so on had lots of very important points that often are forgotten in the new methods. I have made a library where i discuss different celloschools (in norwegian). You are welcome to visit my library All aboat cellotechnics: This page Dear students (and others) you have to visit this wonderful page!! Immediately!!! After teaching several years I have recognised how important it is to learn to play by ear. The most important reason for this is not that the pupils will get surplus to recognize what they are doing on their instrument even if this of course is important. No, the point is that they larn to listen to the melodies and learn to know how the different notes sounds and where they are on the instrument. Notes are only a way of reading music to help in the beginning of practicing. As soon as possible it is important to start to play the melodies from the "inner memory". Then I think the progress will go much faster. It is very important not to rush the musical and instrumental development. During the first years of playing (6 - 9 years) the most important thing is to teach the pupils very properly to get a good technique, how to hold the bow in the right way and a good intonation. Above all, the goal has to be that they learn to love playing, to wake up the "magic spirit" witch will bring them through hours and years of endless practice
